Once upon a time, there was an honest little boy named Hans. Hans had a lot of friends. The most devoted friend of all was big Hugh, the Miller (мельник). The rich Miller was so devoted to little Hans that he never went by his garden without leaning over the wall (не проходил мимо без того, чтобы не перегнуться через забор). Не picked up flowers or filled his pockets with plums or cherries or some other fruit.
"Real friends should have everything in common," the Miller used to say and little Hans smiled and felt very proud of having a friend with such noble ideas. But it was strange that the rich Miller never gave anything in return (взамен). The Miller had a hundred sacks (мешки) of flour, six cows and a lot of sheep.
So little Hans worked in his garden. During spring, summer and autumn Hans was very happy, but when winter came, and he had no fruit or flowers to bring to the market, he suffered from the cold and hunger and often went to bed without supper. In winter he was very lonely, because the Miller never came to see him.
"There is no good in my going to see little Hans now," the Miller used to say to his Wife, "because when people are in trouble visitors should not bother them. That at least (по крайней мере) is my idea of friendship. I shall pay him a visit in spring, and he will be able to give me a large basket of flowers, and that will make him happy."
"You are very thoughtful about others, Hugh," answered the Wife. "It's a pleasure to hear you talk about friendship."
"But could we not ask little Hans come up here?" said the Miller's youngest son. "If poor Hans is in trouble I will give him half of my porridge, and show him my white rabbits."
"What a silly boy you are!" cried the Miller. "If little Hans comes up here, he will get envious (завистливый), and envy is the most terrible thing. Besides, if he comes up here, he may ask for some flour, and I can't do that. Flour is one thing, and friendship is another."
"How well you talk," said the Miller's Wife.
