On this day, collector, merchant and textile manufacturer Pavel Tretyakov purchased a painting of artists Nikolai Shilder "Temptation" and Vasily Khudyakov "The confrontation with Finnish smugglers". In 1881 the gallery was open to the general public. In August 1892 Tretyakov gave his meeting as a gift to Moscow. At that time, the collection included 1287 paintings, 518 drawings and 9 sculptures. Later they were supplemented by paintings belonging to his brother Sergei Tretyakov (1834-1892) (the Russian part of the collection went to the Tretyakov Gallery, Western European paintings were later transferred to the Rumyantsev Museum, now the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts.
