1. Jaipur, India, 10 February Dear Susan,
Harry and I 1) (be) in India since 1 February, but I feel as if we 2)(be) here ten weeks. Since we arrived, each day 3)(fill) with so many new and interesting things!
We 4)(start) our tour in Delhi on the 1 st. There are fascinating sights there, as Delhi 5) (rule) by so many different cultures before Indian independence in 1947. I especially liked the Red Fort, which 6)(built) by the Moghuls in the seventeenth century.
Our next stop was Agra on the 3rd. The train connection between Delhi and Agra is very good. The express train always leaves at 7 a.m. and only 7)(take) three hours. Agra was amazing! Harry 8)(be) there before in 1976 and 1985, but he said he 9)(not see) it like that. When we arrived they were having a festival called Holi, and people 10)(throw) coloured water and powder at each other all day long. I 11)(hit) twice by purple and turquoise water. I 12)(look) like a peacock at the end of the day.
The Taj Mahal 13)(describe) and 14) (photograph) so often over the years, but it 15) (be) still an incredible experience to see it first-hand last week!
On the way from Agra to Jaipur on the 5th, we stopped in a deserted Moghul city called Fatephur Sikri. Marvelous - even though parts of it 16)(renovate) at the moment and can't be seen very well.
Tomorrow we 17)(visit) a fort and palace near Jaipur called Amber, and the tour guide promises we 18)(take) there by elephant! Actually, by the time this tour is finished, we 19)(travel) by plane, train, bus, bicycle rickshaw, elephant and camel!
It's hard to believe that just two weeks from now I 20)(sit) opposite you in the office in cold Manchester.
Besides public holidays there are some special festivals in Great Britain. One of them takes place on the 5th of November. On that day, in 1605, Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament and kill King James I. He didn't succeed. The King's men found the bomb, took Guy Fawkes to the Tower and cut off his head.Since that day the British celebrate the 5th of November. They burn a dummy, made of straw and old clothes, on a bonfire and let off fireworks. This dummy is called a "guy" (like Guy Fawkes) and children can often be seen in the streets before the 5th of November saying, "Penny for the guy." If they collect enough money they can buy some fireworks.
