Penza is an old Russian city, which was founded in the year 1663 on the banks of the river Sura. It was built first as a fort, which was supposed to defend the southern borders of Russia from the nomadic tribes. Then it has grown into a small provincial town and later has become a large city with the population of more than 550 thousand people.
There are many places of architectural and historical interest in Penza and its environs. Tourists are usually invited to visit the Savitsky Art Gallery containing a good collection of paintings; the Folk Crafts Museum, which represents woks of folk decorative and applied art; Lermontov Museum in Tarchany whose display acquaints visitors with the life and literary work of a famous Russian poet M. Lermontov.
Present day Penza is at once like and unlike old Penza. Here you can see tall modern buildings and at the same time buildings, which have become architectural monuments many associated with the names of famous people and historical events.
Penza is a centre of science and education. Its institutes, colleges and training schools attract thousands of young people who wish to specialize in different spheres. There are over 70 secondary schools in Penza.
There are many hobby clubs, which specialize in tourism, drama, dancing and singing. Thousands of schoolchildren attend music and sport schools.
The city's main avenue is Pobeda Prospect. An imposing monument has been erected here to honor the memory of the people who gave their lives in the struggle against fascism and those who worked in the rear.
Many old buildings line Moskovskaya Street where the city's most popular stores, cafes and restaurants are located. The Drama Theatre is also in this street.
Penza is a very green city, with many beautiful parks and squares.
