Следует понимать, что дайвинг, как и другие виды подводной деятельности, требует соблюдения установленных международными школами дайвинга правил и дисциплины. Если придерживаться правил любительского дайвинга, вероятность возникновения опасных ситуаций, влекущих для дайвера тяжелые последствия, стремится к нулю. Тем не менее, чтобы избегать таких ситуаций и быть подготовленным к ним, дайвер должен знать, какие опасности несет океан, если дать волю авантюризму и пренебрегать рекомендациями, которые наработаны происшествиями с другими дайверами.
