Лондон
London is the heart of Britain, it's political and cultural centre. It's large, it's population is almost 9 million.
There are four parts of the city: the City of London, the West End and the East End and Westminster. They are pretty contrasting and each of them is interesting in its own way. The City contains the historic centre and the central business district of London. Thousands of people go there to work. Thousands of tourists go there to admire the famous London sights — St Paul's Cathedral, Monument to the Great Fire of London, the Tower and others.
Westminster is a part of the city associated with the British government, because there are Houses of Parliament and 10 Downing Street. Westminster Abbey is the well-known landmark there. A lot of incredible writers are buried in the Poets' corner — Dickens, Chaucer, Irving, Hardy. Buckingham Palace, the Queen's residence, is also there.
Lots of the city's major tourist attractions, theatres, shops, businesses are in the West End. It's a pretty posh part of the city. The East End was the most dangerous and the poorest part of the capital in the past. Now the district is changing rapidly as more and more offices and apartments are being built.
Trafalgar Square is located in the centre of London.
The National Gallery, one of the most famous museums, is in the north of Trafalgar Square.
The Gallery exhibits extensive collections of various European schools of art. The square is popular with visitors who come to relax, watch pavement artists, or eat their lunch and feed the pigeons.
Northern Ireland is one of the four countries of the United Kingdom. It is situated in the northeastern part of the island of Ireland including Rathlin Island and several smaller offshore islands. The country is washed by the North Channel and by the Irish Sea. The population of Northern Ireland is about 1.7 million people.
Northern Ireland consists of 26 districts and 6 counties of Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Londonderry, and Tyrone. They are also known as Ulster, though the territory does not include the entire ancient province of Ulster.
Northern Ireland has a temperate maritime climate. It’s wetter in the west than in the east of the country, although cloud cover is persistent across the region. Most of the land of Northern Ireland is covered in rich green grass, which is a result of damp climate and extensive deforestation in the 16th and 17th centuries.
Belfast is the capital and largest city of Northern Ireland. Among other major cities we can mention Armagh, Derry, Lisburn and Newry.
Northern Ireland has always had an industrial economy with shipbuilding, rope manufacture and textiles being the main industries. However heavy industry has been replaced by services. Tourism also plays an important role in the local economy. In recent time the economy has benefited from major investment by lots of multi-national corporations into high tech industry.
Northern Ireland has developed its own culture. There are lots of theatres and cinemas in the country. There are two national museums: the Ulster Museum in Belfast, which houses a collection of Irish antiquities and the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum. The Ulster Symphony Orchestra is among the leading orchestras of Britain.

london would not be london without the river thames. it flows 215 miles across the english countryside and then through the heart of the great city before it reaches the sea. the thames has played an extremely important part in making england what it is today.
england had very few roads in the past, so the thames provided a major highway between london and many parts of the country. people could also send supplies of food and other goods to and from london by boat. in times of war, london was protected from sea attacks because they built castles and forts at the mouth of the river. people from the london area got their drinking water from the thames, and thirsty cows and sheep were a common sight along its banks.
with the industrial revolution in the 18th century, the thames became one of the busiest waterways in the world. factories made and exported goods of all kinds. so people became rich and many of them built beautiful houses along the banks oh the river. the famous writer charles dickens spent part of his childhood there and later wrote about the thames in his books.
today the thames has become a symbol of london, just as much as big ben or buckingham palace. if you take a stroll along its banks you'll have a day full of pleasant surprises. you can admire bridges built in many different architectural styles. the most famous one is probably tower bridge which actually opens up 1,000 times a year to let ships through. or you might be lucky enough to see london's rowing event, the oxford and cambridge boat race, which takes place on the river every spring. whether you're a londoner or a visitor, the thames will always have something to offer you.
