В общем, есть такая вещь, как артикли «а», «аn» и «the». Почему они нужны? Ну, начнём с «истории». Артикли «а» и «аn» произошли от слова one — один. Это указывает на то, что предмет один (ЛЮБОЙ! предмет один). А артикль «the» происходит от слова «that», которое указывает на один предмет, но на конкретный. Если мы скажем «a cat», то мы будем иметь ввиду просто кошку. А если мы скажем «the cat», то мы будем говорить о той самой кошке с облезлым хвостом (например). А так, если тебе не важно что это, а просто тебе известно, что это такое, то нужно говорить «а» в тех случаях, где слово начинается с согласной. А в данном случае, в словосочетании «an American» мы говорим про американца. Но тут артикль «an», потому что слово «American» начинается с гласной.
