Первые игры для спортсменов-инвалидов были проведены в 1948 году в Стоук-Мандевиле в Англии. В день церемонии открытия Олимпийских Игр в Лондоне, были организованы первые соревнования для спортсменов на колясках. Четыре года спустя, спортсмены из Голландии присоединились к играм; таким образом, зародилось международное движение.  Соревнования в стиле Олимпийских игр для спортсменов с ограниченными возможностями были организованы впервые в Риме в 1960 году. Около 4000 спортсменов из 23 стран соревновались в 8 видах спорта. С тех пор Паралимпийские игры проводятся каждые 4 года.
