Welcome to 'Sport Today'. And this morning we are talking about a very popular summer game – cricket. Cricket is England’s national sport.
2.
Traditionally, the players wear cricket whites – all their clothes are white. The batsmen wear cricket pads on their legs and gloves to protect themselves. Many batsmen wear helmets to protect their heads from the very hard cricket ball which the bowler throws at the wicket.
3.
So, how do you play the game? There are 11 players on each team. They play with a ball that is a little smaller than a baseball, and a bat. The two teams take it in turns to bat. They stand inside an area called a wicket. It is 20 metres long, and at each end there is a set of special sticks, also called a wicket. It has three stumps which the bowler tries to hit.
4.
The bowler runs up and throws the hard ball at the wicket. The batsman has to hit the ball, so that it does not hit the wicket.
5.
The two batsmen try to run from one wicket to the other while the other team try to catch the ball. Each time the batsmen change places they score a 'run'. The score is put on a large scoreboard.
Today's environmental challenges make us vulnerable to disasters and tragedies, both now and in the future. Around the world, people are facing many new and complex environmental “disruptions”. Some of them are small and affect only a few ecosystems, while others drastically change the living conditions that we consider normal.
It takes millions of years to neutralize the effects of these pollution. Industry and car exhaust are a major source of air pollutants: heavy metals, nitrates and toxins from plastics. The gases and toxins released by industrial plants are generated by burning fossil fuels. And water pollution often occurs due to oil spills, acid rain, city runoff. Land pollution is mainly caused by industrial waste depriving the soil of essential nutrients.
