To report a question that starts with a question word, we use the reporting verb "asked" or "wondered" as per the context. The question word is changed to the corresponding question word in reported speech. In this case, the reported speech will start with "he/she asked" or "he/she wondered."
For example:
Original question: "Where's the football match?"
Reported speech: He asked where the football match was.
Original question: "Is Aizhan at the boxing event?"
Reported speech: He asked if/whether Aizhan was at the boxing event.
b)
To report a question that starts with a modal, we use the reporting verb "asked" or "inquired." The modal remains the same in reported speech, and the word order changes to subject+modal+verb in the reported speech.
For example:
Original question: "Can I come?"
Reported speech: She asked if she could come.
c)
To report a yes/no question, we use the reporting verb "asked" or "queried." In reported speech, the question is transformed into an indirect statement without the question format.
For example:
Original question: "Can we play in here?"
Reported speech: They asked if they could play in there.
Original question: "Are they competing in the race tonight?"
Reported speech: He asked if they were competing in the race tonight.
Original question: "Did they leave?"
Reported speech: She asked if they had left.
