The doctor asked what was the matter with Mr. Walker. The man answered that the doctor 'd better ask him what was not the matter with him. He said that he seemed to be suffering from all the illnesses imaginable: insomnia, headaches, backache, indigestion, constipation and pains in the stomach. He added that he had caught a cold, he had got a sore throat and he was constantly sneezing and coughing. Moreover, he mentioned that he had had an accident the other day, hurt his right shoulder, leg and knee, and nearly had broken his neck, felt more dead than alive. The doctor was sorry to hear that and hoped things weren't as bad as Mr.Walker imagined. He asked the patient to examine and summarised that the man's heart, chest and lungs seemed to be all right. Then he asked to open his mouth and to show him the man's tongue, to breathe in deeply, through the nose... The doctor added that there didn't seem to be anything radically wrong with Mr.Walker, but it was quite clear that the man had run down, and if he didn't take care of himself, he may have a nervous breakdown and had to go to hospital. The doctor advised to stop worrying, to take a long rest, to have regular meals, to keep to a diet of salads and fruit, and very little meat, to keep off alcohol. He mentioned that If it was possible, the man should give up smoking, at least for a time. Then he said that Mr had that tonic made up and took two tablespoonfuls three times a day before meals. The doctor promised that If the man did this, full recovery would be within two or three months. The patient asked if he didn't and the doctor answered that then he would better make his will, if he hadn't yet done so. The patient thanked the doctor and said that one shall had to think it over and decide which was the lesser evil: to follow his advice or prepare for a better world.
