A) Listen and repeat. • What are your plans for the summer? • I heard about a great volunteering programme. What will we do there? • The main activity is monitoring the penguins.
It is not surprising that millions of people all over the world spend their holidays travelling. It broadens our impressions, gives a possibility to see other countries and continents, modern towns, and of course, travelling by itself is a good rest.
There is a tendency that people living in the country, prefer to visit big cities and enjoy their museums, art galleries, theatres, shops. But city dwellers tend to have a quiet holiday near the sea, in the village, or in the mountains. All of them want to do is to bathe, to lie in the sun, to breathe fresh air and just relax.
While travelling usually people like to take pictures of everything interesting. Old churches, ancient buildings, castles, mountains, rivers, waterfalls attract their attention. Perhaps some years later they will show pictures to their friends and tell about the places they have been to.
There are many different possibilities of travelling: by car, by train, by plane, and others. Thus we may choose the suitable one for us.
Travelling by train, we usually book tickets in advance, pack our luggage and go to a railway station. No doubt that travelling by train is much slower than by plane, but nevertheless, sitting in a cosy compartment, we may view the landscape of fields and forests or the countries we are travelling through. Today we have modern trains, which are very comfortable. They have sleeping cars, dining cars and everything to make our journey pleasant.
Some people travel by plane. It should be mentioned that this way is more comfortable, much quicker, but more expensive. In the airport it is necessary to check the luggage, pass through the procedure of registration and only then we may board the plane. On board the plane people are met by stewardesses. They bring water, tea, sandwiches and remind that for the passengers safety they should fasten the seat bealts. During the flight you may read a book, a magazine or a newspaper, you may just look through the window at the clouds or have some sleep.
Travelling by car also has some advantages. You may choose your own route and stop at the places you wish.
So, any kind of travelling is interesting. Everything you have to do is to pack your things, decide what place you want to go to, take your family or friends and enjoy your rest.
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland covers an area of some 244 thousand square miles. It is situated on the British Isles. The British Isles are separated from Europe by the Strait of Dover and the English Channel. The British Isles are washed by the North Sea in the east and the Atlantic Ocean in the west. The population of Great Britain is about 60 million. The largest cities of the country are London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow and Edinburgh. The territory of Great Britain is divided into four parts: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. England is in the southern and central part of Great Britain. Scotland is in the north of the island. Wales is in the west. Northern Ireland is situated in the north-eastern part of Ireland. England is the richest, the most fertile and most populated part in the country. The northwestern part of England there are many beautiful lakes. This part of the country is called Lake District. Scotland is a land of mountains. The Highlands of Scotland are among the oldest mountains in the world. The chain of mountains in Scotland is called the Grampians. Its highest peak is Ben Nevis. In England there is the Pennine Chain. In Wales there are the Cumbrian Mountains. There are no great forests on the British Isles today. Historically, the most famous forest is Sherwood Forest in the east of England, to the north of London. It was the home of Robin Hood, the famous hero of a number of legends. The British Isles have many rivers but they are not very long. The longest of the English rivers is the Severn. The most important river of Scotland is the Clyde. Glasgow stands on it. Many of the English and Scottish rivers are joined by canals, so that it is possible to travel by water from one end of Great Britain to the other.
