A. Some years ago, when I was travelling about India, I saw children having classes on the train platforms at the stations. I learnt that there were about 70 such schools and they had offered education to over 4000 children. B. I was told, there were many poor people who couldn’t send their children to school because of financial problems. Many families lived near the train stations and their children begged for money at train stops to help their parents to make money. The only way for them to get education was to attend classes on train platforms.

C. I was surprised to see schools where there were no classrooms, canteens or gyms. There were no special school supplies like textbooks, desks, chairs, blackboards, computers and etc. Students just sat on the platform and listened to the teacher.

D. There was no timetable and the children could come and go. They could leave whenever they needed and it made going to school easy.

E. I saw that children had fun studying at train platform schools. They were taught only few subjects: reading, maths and how to be healthy. They sang songs, danced, played games and even had puppet shows.

F. I understood that those schools were very important for children from poor families because there they learnt how to find jobs so that they could make money and support their families.
