Транзистор может переключать потоки энергии так же,как и вакуумные лампы,используемые в компьютере,но потребляет намного меньше энергии и значительно меньше по размеру. Транзисторы гораздо дешевле и более надёжны. Они более крепки механически,имеют почти неисчерпаемый срок действия и может выполнять некоторые действия качественнее,чем электронные лампы. Транзисторы изготавливались из цельного кристаллического материала -- полупроводника. Вместе с транзисторами пришла и возможность конструирования более сложных и быстрых компьютеров.
