If you think it is difficult to run a marathon and only sportsmen can do it, you’re wrong. Thousands of people take part in marathons in many cities: in New York, Paris and London. These people come from different places, they are young and old, they have different jobs. The oldest runner in 1982 was 70. His name was George Brenan. He was from Scotland. He started running when he was 65. He took part in the London Marathon and finished it in four hours. He took part in the Glasgow Marathon too. The weather was very bad that day. It was rainy and windy but George finished the marathon in three hours and forty−five minutes – a wonderful time for a man who was seventy.
My favourite destination is Kaliningrad. The Kaliningrad region is a small part of the Russian Federation which is separated from it by some European countries. I have visited Kaliningrad many times because I’ve got relatives there. However, I always look forward to going there because this town is magnificent.
I think Kaliningrad doesn’t take after any other Russian town. It’s all because Kaliningrad used to be a German town. Its name used to be Kӧnigsberg. It became Russian only after World War II. That’s why this town combines the Russian and German character.
Though Kaliningrad was ruined during the war, many old German buildings survived and they all are unique historical monuments and wonderful places of interest. There are magnificent cathedrals, ancient castles and charming old houses with beautiful gardens.
Kaliningrad is the hometown for the well- known philosopher Immanuel Kant. That’s why there are so many monuments devoted to him. One of them is the Cathedral on Kant’s Island which is the symbol of Kaliningrad. To my mind, a fantastic place to visit is the Museum of Amber. It is situated in an ancient castle and contains the great collection of pieces of art made of amber.
I’m sure that Kaliningrad is worth visiting again.
