Демоверсия (6 form) Reading A.Read the text. In each question choose the right answer, A, B, C or D. Erik the Red For the Vikings, the greatest achievement for any man was to do something great in their lifetime so that people remembered them after their death. To achieve this, some Vikings sailed the seas in search of treasure and new lands. One of the most famous Vikings is Eric Thorvaldson. He achieved fame as Erik the Red, the man who discovered Greenland. Erik the Red lived between 950-1005 AD. He got his name from his bright red hair and beard, and his hot, fiery personality. For the first part of his life, Erik lived happily in Iceland. His adventures started in 981, when he had a fight with his neighbours and killed two men. Local people were very mad. They told Erik to leave the country for 3 years. Erik and his family had no choice. They left Iceland and sailed off into the huge Atlantic ocean. Erik sailed west from Iceland to look for a new island to live on. However, he sailed so far that he discovered something amazing. A new country! Erik spent two years exploring the new country. The land was mostly covered in ice, but he found a few green areas and decided to found a colony there. To begin his colony, Erik needed help. So, in 985, he returned to Iceland to tell people about his “wonderful” new land. Erik called his new land Greenland to make people think it was a nicer place to live than Iceland. Many people were interested in the new country. When Erik sailed back to Greenland in 986, 25 ships with 500 men and women and many animals went with him. The Vikings started two colonies in Greenland. To survive, they farmed sheep and cows, hunted polar bears and whales, and traded whale bones and bear skins. Thanks to their farming and hunting skills the colonies grew and grew. By the year 1000, about 3,000 people lived in Greenland. For the next 500 years, Vikings lived in Greenland. Aikama Zorba - this was the name of the dog that lived in Great Britain, designated in the Guinness Book of Records as "the largest dog in the world". In November 1989, when Zorba stood on the scales, their arrow was barely enough to 156 kg.
In height, this rare representative of the breed "English mastiff" waved well, too - at 94 cm. At one time, Zorba lived on the globe and St. Bernard Benedict, who was almost up to 140 kg.
By the way, it is the St. Bernards and Mastiffs who are recognized as the largest canine breeds.

Not by weight, but according to their growth, they are still superior to the Danish mastiffs and Irish wolfhounds, also considered giants in the canine world.
In autumn of 2014, to the great chagrin of his masters, this perishable world, aged, left the blue mastiff Zeus: to his last days he proudly wore the title "The biggest dog in the world".
The dog grew to almost 112 cm (from the paws to the withers), and getting up on the hind legs, he could easily throw balls into the basket, as he reached the basketball parameters - 2 m 23 cm

Animals At The Zoo Животные в зоопарке
Zoo is one of the main attractions in urban areas. Most people love zoos and eagerly attend them. However, since the time they were introduced, zoos have been both supported and criticized. From the one hand, they are entertaining and ecologically friendly. From the other hand, keeping animals in captivity seems to be inhuman.

As for me, I like visiting the local zoo, although it’s a small one. You can see various animals and birds there, which is not only entertaining but also educational. There are sparrows, eagles, pigeons, parrots of different colors among the birds. Among the wild animals, you can see tigers, lions, wolves, bears, monkeys - all kept in safe enclosures. There is also an aquarium with a variety of aquatic animals and fishes.

Each time I visit this place, it fills me with thrill and excitement. That’s why, zoos are simply necessary for kids, especially the youngest ones. They are still exploring the surrounding environment and animals are part of it.

However, I understand that critics of zoos have all the rights to protest against keeping animals in captivity. They advocate animals’ freedom and their right to live in natural habitat instead of small cages. Indeed, it’s unfair to take animals out of their natural environment.

More than that, I know that in some countries animals in the zoos are not provided with care and attention and are often undernourished. In developing countries they also don’t get sufficient medical treatment. This fact makes me sad, as I really wish animals could live in good conditions.
