Chimpanzees are a genus of monkeys in the family Hominidae. It includes two species: common chimpanzees and pygmy chimpanzees (aka bonobos). These monkeys are capable of displaying very similar emotions to human ones, can admire the beautiful and sympathize – and at the same time fight, hunt the weak for fun and eat their relatives.
According to DNA studies, the ancestors of chimpanzees and humans separated 6 million years ago – and this makes them the closest relatives, since the separation with other hominids happened earlier. The coincidence of the genome reaches 98.7%, there are a lot of physiological similarities – for example, the blood groups of chimpanzees correspond to human ones. Bonobo blood can even be transfused to humans.
After the separation, the chimpanzee ancestors continued to evolve – as a group of Chinese scientists led by Jianzhi Zhang found, their evolution was much faster, and they were more distant from their common ancestors than humans. Scientific description and name in Latin chimpanzees received in 1799 in the work of the German
Common chimpanzees live in the rainforests and humid savannas of West and Central Africa. They once inhabited most of this area, but their habitat has been drastically reduced in recent.
