To begin with, most Russians do not celebrate Christmas on December 25, but instead do so on January 7 according to Julian calendar. Russia has many beautiful Christmas traditions. Many years ago, one of the most beloved traditions took place в ночь перед Рождеством (on Christmas night). After breaking the 40-day fast with family, people used to stay up all night, walk from house to house and sing колядки (Christmas carols). As a reward, колядующие (those singing колядки) would get generous угощение(refreshments). This tradition возраждается (is resurging). Another tradition is Svyatki. This is the period after Christmas Day until the 18th of January. On this day people used to dress up in the skin of different animals and sing songs in worship of the main god - the Sun. The celebration was called Kolyada. On the first night of Kolyada, people lit a big fire which was kept burning for 12 days, as a symbol of new life. On hills, people rolled a big burning wheel as a symbol of the Sun. All the people came together in the biggest house in the village, and listened to stories and songs, and dressed in new, white clothes, to call on good luck and a rich harvest. Nowadays, the meaning of this holiday changed, and the Orthodox church banned pagan (языческий) rituals and celebrations. However, the highly popular custom of dressing in animal skins and masks remained, and continues even to this day! Talking about food, the Christmas Eve meal is typically without meat and may be made up of twelve dishes to represent the twelve apostles. For example, Kutya is a dish made of wheat grains with walnuts, raisins and honey. Also, people eat vegetarian-style borsch or solyanka. As for the Christmas day, people eat pork or goose and sush dishes as aspic (холодец), pies and various desserts. Finally, I would like to say that Christmas is a holiday which brings happiness and joy. We like to celebrate it with our family and to get positive emotions. So, Christmas is a holiday which binds a family together.
