a) find words in the text which have the same meanings as the following

b) find words in the text whose meanings are opposite to the meanings of the
following words:
informal, narrow, bad, different, the beginning, old, to give up, small, before;
c) replace the words in italics with the words with similar and opposite meanings:
1. This road is rather broad. 2. They study different subjects. 3. They want
to continue their education. 4. The children are eating with good manners.
5. They were reading the text at the beginning of the lesson.

During the Middle Ages in Europe, water and windmills revolutionized energy production. New technologies have allowed people to build beautiful cathedrals - the finest example of Gothic architecture. During the 14th century guns appeared in Europe. From the 15th to the 17th century, during the Renaissance period, the New World was discovered and explored. Printed books helped develop European cultural life. The Renaissance saw a renewed interest in technology, and new technologies led to new challenges. One problem was that shipbuilding and ferrous metallurgy required a lot of timber and Europe was rapidly losing its forests. Another problem was the need for more powerful engines. There was an industrial revolution in Europe in the 18th century, a time when technology developed quite rapidly. In 1712, Thomas Newsman, an Englishman, invented the steam engine. In 1760, James Watt improved the Newsman engine, which paved the way for the construction of steamboats and locomotives in the early 19th century. The Industrial Revolution spurred the engineering profession. More and more universities were training engineers. During the 19th and 20th centuries, human life has changed a lot thanks to science and technology. Advances in transport, communication and energy use have had a major impact on modern society. Medical knowledge has given people longer and healthier lives. Computers give us new opportunities at work and at home. Now people have a higher standard of living and much more free time. On the other hand, many people might argue that such great technological advances don't come without problems. New technology has led to the creation of weapons of mass destruction, new communication technologies and the dissemination of information have brought with them less privacy, the greater use and abuse of natural resources is now harming the environment, the greater intensity of human life is stressful and calls into question the advantage of high technology.
