The modern city, with over half a million people, has grown from a tiny hamlet. Here from small scattered shops arose the great industries which have made the words ''Sheffield, England" famous throughout the world. Proud of their skill and eager for its survival they passed on their knowledge and experience from father to son.
Where the Don, the principal river flows through the modern city, its banks are lined with steel works.
When a traveler through Sheffield sees these workshops and judges Sheffield by them, he may think that the whole city is dull. He does not know that people have managed to concentrate their industries in one place leaving the natural beauty of the valleys and hills near the city.
