Since и For употребляются с временной группой perfect, в аспекте простом и длительном.

Разница только в функции и группе глагола. Глаголы состояния не будут употребляться в аспекте continuous, для обозначения длительности и результата : вот пары предложений с глаголами состояния и действия, для иллюстрации:

* They have been married since July.

* They have been reading this book since Monday.

* We have had this car for 5 years.

* She has been going to singing classes for 2 years.

* I have hated broccoli since childhood.

* I have been learning English since childhood.
