Winter holidays are shorter than summer ones. They begin at the end of December and last about two weeks. It is so nice to have a rest from school.
During winter holidays we celebrate the New Year’s Eve and Christmas. There are New Year parties for children at schools and theatres. Cinemas show children films and cartoons.
It is usually very cold in winter, but frost and snow can’t keep children indoors. It’s so great to go skiing down a hill. Boys like to play hockey on the ice. Many children go to the skating-rinks to skate. Small children play snowballs and make snowmen, or ride on the sledges happily.
When the weather is bad, I stay at home and watch TV. There is always something interesting on during winter holidays. Sometimes my friends come to see me and we play computer games or listen to music. There is also more time for reading, drawing, making model planes and other hobbies.
Holidays pass quickly and soon it’s time to go to school again.
One afternoon Mr. Wallis who lived far from the centre of London was walking home. It had already got dark, when Mr. Wallis came to a street where there were no people. Suddenly a man stopped him and asked if he would buy a cat from him. As Mr. Wallis did not want to buy the cat, the man aimed his pistol at him. "How much do you want for it?" asked Mr. Wallis. "It's not expensive. Five hundred pounds only," was the reply. So Mr. Wallis had to sign a cheque for £500 and the man gave him the cat. Several years passed. One day Mr. Wallis went shopping. When he called at a small shop he recognized the man who had sold him the white cat several years before. Mr. Wallis left the shop and a little later came back. "I have brought a white cat. Will you buy it?" smiled Mr. Wallis. "It is one of the lovely kittens of the white cat that you sold me several years ago. I advise you to buy it." The man understood everything. He told Mr. Wallis that he would pay him for the cat if Mr. Wallis did not tell the police about it and if he never came to the shop again. "How much does cost it now?" he asked.
