When we talk about endangered species, we might mention a sea turtle, a giant panda, or maybe even an Asian elephant, but we rarely think of a shark. It comes as no surprise when we see sharks in movies, TV shows and books are portrayed as human-eating for 30 years by 90%, mainly due to illegal fishing. Sharks may be at the top of the food chain, but they are vital to predators. In fact, the shark population has dropped dramatically, supporting the ecosystem. When their number decreases, the natural balance of the oceans is disrupted. One man, Rob Stewart, is dedicated to raising awareness of sharks, whose bad reputation he believes is completely undeserved. “Sharks kill about 5 people a year and yet they are hated,” he says. Stewart first became interested in sharks as a child, and after graduating in marine biology became a wildlife photographer.
