Horse Racing and Horse-riding in Britain.

Sport has a long and famous tradition in British history. Most popular world sports were born in the UK: football, tennis, golf, cricket and rugby. Do not forget the many others including boxing, table tennis, hockey and squash.

Horse racing is one of the most famous pleasures in Great Britain. The Romans brought the idea of horse racing to the British shores. Although the British already had a great love for the animals and used them a lot, soldiers organized the first competitions only around 200 AD. By the 10th century, the sport had become quite popular.

In 1711, Queen Anne founded Ascot horse races and since that time British monarchs have supported them. Royal racing at Ascot is held every year in the third week in June. The Queen takes a close personal interest in the running of Ascot. Though people still think that horse racing is the sport of kings, today it has become one of the most popular entertainments for the British. Royal Ascot is a very important part of British culture.

The Grand National first appeared in 1839. It is a National Hunt horse race, which takes place each year in Liverpool. Horses jump 30 fences in this race and cover a distance of 7,141 km. The Grand National has an advantage over other hunt horse racings because it is the longest race in Britain.

In any horse racing there are two winners: a leading horse and a leading jockey. Horse race fans are also proud of leading trainers and leading horse owners.

Horse-riding is another popular outdoor activity in Britain. Families can enjoy this activity all together. Children usually get very excited about it. When people start riding, they need specialist instruction to find the right horse for them. The riding instructor tells horse riders what to wear on their feet and also what type of trousers to wear. A horse rider must wear a hard hat.
