Shakespeare was born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon. His father was a glove maker and the family was quite comfortable. William went to school. At the age of about 14, he had to work in the family business.

In those days theatre-goers enjoyed cruel scenes on the stage. Tragedies in which the central characters died were especially popular with the public.
