Part one here is a conversation between julia and her uncle jim. julia is going on a school trip to spain, to help improve her language skills. read the conversation and write each verb in brackets in the correct tense. the first one has been done for you. oh, uncle jim, i am so happy – and i know you will be (be) too when you hear my news. i have been talking to mum and dad and they (agree) that i can go on the school trip to spain. it is quite expensive, but they think it will be worth it. hello julia. you are right, i (please). as you know, i think language learning is very important, and the best way to learn is to spend time in the country where the language is spoken. and i (know), because that is how i have managed to speak three languages – even though i am only fluent in english! i just wish i could speak french and russian better than i do. of course, your mother (speak) french very fluently, but that’s because she lived there for a year when she was a student. i know, mum is brilliant in french. it makes it so easy when we go on holiday there; she can do all the talking. she says it is the only time dad allows her (make) all the decisions – and the reason he does so is that he cannot understand a word she is saying. so my idea is that, if i improve my spanish, then perhaps we could go on holiday to spain next year. that would be fantastic, as i am sure the weather is better there, and they have some fabulous beaches. i don’t know about the weather in spain, but i wish i had been given your opportunity to study in another country for three weeks when i (be) still at school. and your school trip to spain is not a holiday. you will have to work hard, you know. will you be staying with a family? do you know which city (go) to? and how long will you be there? steady on, you are asking so many questions! we will be going for three weeks, and i will be living with my penfriend’s family, in madrid – and i will also be going to school with her every day, and (have) lessons in spanish. all day, every day. there will be other girls from my school there too, but as they (be) older than me, i will not see them very often in the spanish school. i will be on my own with my penfriend, sophia. that’s excellent. you will either have to learn to speak in spanish, or you will have to live for three weeks without talking – and i know you can’t do that. i tell you what i will do. if you promise to work hard while you are there, i will give you some spending money before you go, and if your teachers tell your parents that you (make) good progress while you were in spain, i will also give you spending money for that holiday in spain you want so much. part two друзья, убедиться в том, что сделано правильно! later julia is telling her mother about the telephone call with her uncle. fill the gaps using the numbered phrases written in in bold from the conversation in part one. the first one has been done for you. “oh, mum, i have just had a lovely chat with uncle jim. i was telling him about you and dad agreeing that i can go to spain he is so pleased; he said that he thinks language learning is very important, and that the only way to speak three languages was by spending time in each country. he also said that you speak french really well, but that is because when you were a student. and he added that he wished he had been given the opportunity to study abroad when he was at school. oh, and he asked me loads of questions about the arrangements. he is worse than you and dad! he wanted to know if which city i was going to, and where i would be staying. so i told him about going to madrid, and being with sophia, and i explained that for most of the time with her. and then he was really amazing! he said that if while i was in spain, he would give me some spending money! that means you and dad won’t have to pay out quite so much for the trip.”
