nato has warned that european countries may have to face living in a new reality following
the scrapping of the long-standing nuclear treaty between russia and the united states.
in the latest chapter of the war of words over the treaty, the alliance's secretary general said
despite the dismantling of the agreement, nato's commitment to shared defence remained
strong.
speaking at a brussels commemoration event for the september 11 attacks, jens
stoltenberg said europe needs to prepare for a world where russia could place
nuclear-capable missiles on its doorstep.
"what we are doing in nato now is that we are adapting to a world without the inf treaty,
with more russian missiles," he said.
"we will do that in a coordinated, in a defensive way, but we have to make sure that we
maintain credible defence also in a world where the inf treaty doesn't exist anymore and
where russia has deployed new nuclear-capable missiles in europe."
the united states formally withdrew from the cold war-era intermediate-range nuclear
forces treaty (inf) on august 2, after accusing moscow of violating it, a charge dismissed
by the kremlin.
the pact had prohibited land-based missiles with a range of 310-3,400 miles, reducing the
ability
of both countries to launch a nuclear strike at short notice.
Science fiction writers wrote about different wonders and robots. But robots are not a reality. Where are our robots which help us to do the ironing, cook dinner, walk the dog, clean the house and so on? Perhaps it is much more difficult in practice than in theory to build such a robot. Our scientists don't have the knowledge to give a robot intelligence or the power of reasoning. Perhaps they may never work it out. Researchers say that the best way to overcome this problem is to study the human brain and try create an artificial brain. Nevertheless, scientists have already overcome other problems such as mobility. Also, robots can now look more human. Language may be another problem as robots have to be able to understand man's speech. Experts are divided as to when robot assistants may become a reality. Some ofscisay five years, others say fifty. Maybe soon household robots may be as common as home computers.
Our school is a modern two-storeyed building of a typical design. It is situated in the centre of the city in a picturesque street named after the great Russian poet A. S. Pushkin. In front of our school there are round flower-beds, where pupils grow different flowers during their biology lessons.
There are different specialized classrooms for the lessons of Physics, Chemistry, Geography and Biology. They have slide projectors; schemes and tables are on the walls. Chemistry and Physics classrooms have special laboratories well equipped for different experiments and tests, which are made by our pupils during the lessons.
The first floor of our school is occupied by English, French and German classrooms. There one can find different pictures, maps, diagrams and wall newspapers on the walls.
On the second floor there is our gymnasium and assembly hall, where we usually gather to celebrate different holidays. We decorate the assembly room with colourful balloons, slogans and our pictures. In the gymnasium we have our classes of physical training and also spend the breaks between the lessons playing volleyball or basketball.
There are also classrooms for junior pupils in our school. They are decorated with large pictures of nature, different things made by the youngest schoolchildren, large posters with alphabet and numbers and so on. Those rooms are the largest and most beautiful in our school.
We also have aesthetics classroom where we have the lessons of drawing, music and Russian and Russian literature. There one can see portraits of poets and writers, posters with the history of the development of costumes.
The canteen and the cloak-room are on the ground floor. On the whole our school is very clean and light. There are white and pink curtains on the windows and many flowers on the window sills. The corridors are large and full of sunlight. There we can have some rest between our classes or just talk with each other.
I like my school very much.
