I moved through the big rooms and wide halls of my house. I was looking for a book of poems I had put somewhere. I opened the door of the dining-room and went in. It was dark and I turned on the lights and cried out.
A man stood in front of me. In his hand was a gun.
I was very muсh surprised and asked what he wanted.
He answered ironically that he was a robber and he hadn`t expected to find me in. He asked me to show him the way out.
I said that I would cry for help.
He answered slowly that he would kill me then.
I asked him to stay a few minutes and talk.
The robber told me that he had done his best, but there was no work for him. He used to be an honest man before he had started looking for a job.
I took my seat at the table and placed him on the other side of it.
I saw him look about the room, then he put the gun on the corner of the table between us. But he was in a strange house and did not know that under the table, near my foot, was an electric bell.
The robber explained that he wasn`t a robber and he hadn`t come there to steal. He had had a little mine once, and old Setliffe had taken it away from him. So, he had had nothing left. And as his friend needed money badly he had just come to take something back from my father. He was really taking what was his.
He added that what is right is not always legal. That's why he had to go.
I suddenly took up the gun. At the same time I pushed the bell with my foot. My servant Thomas came in and I asked him to call the police.
But the robber hadn`t even turned his head.
The servant left the room. And I already saw the newspapers with the story of the beautiful young Mrs Setliffe who had caught a dangerous robber in her own house.
I said that I hadn't believed a single word of his story.
He didn`t answer.
But soon he said that he was going to walk out of the door. He was sure that I was not going to shoot. It isn't easy to kill a man and he was sure I couldn't do it.
He stood up slowly. And I began to pull the trigger.
At the door the man turned round. He spoke to me in a low voice as he had called me a bad name.
