Disney was the first to make an animated film with sound. It was called Steamboat Willie and starred Mickey and Minnie Mouse. The film was a great success. Disney also created such characters as Donald Duck, Goofy, and Pluto. His studio started to make full-length animated films including Snow White, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, Bambi, Alice in Wonderland, and Peter Pan. Walt planned and built Disneyland, a huge amusement park with rides and entertainment based on his movies. The park opened near Los Angeles in 1955. Disney also had the idea to build an even larger park in Florida called Walt Disney World. He worked on the plans, but died before the park opened in 1971. Walt Disney won 26 Academy Awards ("Oscars") out of 59 nominations.
