The USA is divided into 3 areas: 1) Eastern area – a highland, where a big mountain chain, the Appalachians, is situated; 2) Central area – a plain; 3) Western area – which is mountainous and includes another big mountain chain, the Rocky Mountains (or the Rockies). - The north-eastern part of the country is the region of the 5 great lakes: Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario. The Niagara Falls, one of the main American attractions, join Lakes Erie and Ontario. - Many rivers cross the United States. But the greatest is the mighty Mississippi. Among other big rivers are the Colorado River which rises in the Rocky Mountains, and the Missouri.
