Reading Task 1. Read the text and choose the correct option.
A. Nanotechnology is the latest breakthrough in technology. It refers to science and technology in dimensions smaller than one thousand nanometers. One nanometer is a billionth of a meter. The research in nanotechnology is going primarily in two directions, construction of objects atom by atom and production of nano-sized machines. This field of technology is still mysterious for me, and includes a number of undiscovered things.
B. Imagine if we could build objects by assembling the atoms. It is fascinating that we could build whatever we wanted, from a diamond to a flower. We would simply gather the necessary atoms in the correct way to make anything we wanted. If you got hungry, you wouldn't have to cook. You would just order what you wanted from a machine and it would assemble the food for you, atom by atom. If you needed new clothes, you wouldn't have to go to the store or even sew, a machine would assemble the atoms into a beautiful outfit.
C. Another branch of nanotechnology research involves making nano-sized machines for different purposes. It is surprising that these nano-sized robots could go into your body and cure diseases. If you got sick you wouldn't need to have surgery. You would just drink a solution that contained the little nano-robots and they would repair your body from the inside, like little mechanics.
D. Nanotechnology raises interesting questions, but, in my view, it has a lot of potential. If we could use nanotechnology to produce food and objects, it would mean the end of hunger and poverty. Perhaps we could even travel long distances almost instantly by disassembling our atoms in one place and reassembling them in our destination. The sky is the limit to what we could do with nanotechnology!

Saint petersburg (russia) (russian sankt peterburg), second largest city and largest seaport in russia, located in the northwestern part of the country, at the head of the gulf of finland (an arm of the baltic sea). the capital of russia for two centuries (1712-1918), saint petersburg is one of the most beautiful cities in europe, noted for its lavish palaces and grand cathedrals. it is also a major rail junction and an industrial, cultural, and scientific center. the city is located on both banks of the neva river and on a number of river islands. saint petersburg has been renamed three times since its founding. construction of the city began in 1703, ordered by russian tsar (later emperor) peter the great, who named it saint petersburg after his patron saint. after world war i broke out in 1914, the city's germanic name was changed to petrograd. in 1924, upon the death of soviet leader vladimir lenin, its name was changed to leningrad. finally, in june 1991, six months before the union of soviet socialist republics (ussr) officially dissolved and russia emerged as an independent country, the city reverted to its original name. saint petersburg’s climate is one of strong contrasts. it is affected by air masses coming off the atlantic ocean and by polar continental air, which in winter is very dry and cold. saint petersburg has cold winters, with temperatures in january averaging -10° c (14° f); the summers are generally cool, with the temperature in july averaging 17° c (63° f). although the city’s harbor is frozen for three to four months of each year, icebreakers keep it open for much of the winter season.

В наши дни, когда космос заселен людьми и Земля, как голубое маковое зерно, отчетливо видна с далеких планет, когда ежедневно стаи ракет уплывают с Земли в океан пустоты и возвращаются обратно, трудно представить себе пропажу космического корабля. Да еще такого корабля, как «Виктория»!.. «Виктория», краса звездного флота, фантастическая птица с гордо вздернутым вперед клювом, совершала броски в Ближний, Дальний и Конечный космос. Ее серо-стальные бока и крылья отполировал ветер разноцветных звезд; ее острый шпиль пронзал пустоту с беззаботной легкостью иглы, скользящей сквозь кусок ткани. Двигатели точно выводят «Викторию» к самой отдаленной цели, и гигантский лайнер причаливает с осторожностью шлюпки в порту незнакомой планеты, возле космической станции или у порога одноместного корабля астронавта, затерянного среди звезд. Сотни историй в судовом журнале о ближних и дальних рейсах «Виктории». Но этот рассказ – о последнем путешествии, когда корабль, попав случайно в беду, оказался достойным своего знаменитого имени-девиза: «Победа!» В космосе все на виду, словно в аквариуме. Телескопы, станции, спутники, корабли изучили звездный мир до мельчайшего «винтика». И ни один мастер небесной механики не мог, разумеется, предсказать, что первоклассный пассажирский лайнер исчезнет однажды в бесконечности из-за тайного обитателя трюмов, точнее – из-за обыкновенного грызуна. Однако в этой истории немало странного. И что еще важно: «Виктория» уточнила движение Стрелы времени: люди острее почувствовали, куда нацелен наконечник этой Стрелы, увидели разницу между и будущим Земли.
