The New Year is a very popular holiday in Belarus. Most people start 1) their houses and New Year Trees a week before the holiday. On New Year's Eve, 31 December, people stay up until 2) to 3) the New Year with their family and friends. When the clock is 4) , people are thinking of their wishes (желания) for the coming year. New Year’s 1) – 31st December – is a time for the British to eat, drink and party when they 2) the beginning of a new year. Many people go to 3) in London, or a street party in their city. Others visit friends or go to 4) and restaurants, which are very crowded on that night.
There is a great atmosphere when everyone waits for Big Ben 5) midnight. Then people kiss and 6) to sing the traditional Scottish song Auld Lang Syne. Many people also light 7) at midnight.
