1. I live in Russia, which is the world's largest country. 2. Of course, on the extensive territory of this country there are many big and small cities, towns, villages and other settlements. 3. Some of them are very old, with unique history and traditions. 4. St. Petersburg is a large beautiful city in the north-western part of Russia. 5. It is a city of white nights, green parks, numerous channels and bridges, granite embankments and railings. 6. Many famous Russian and foreign architects created the face of the city in the 18th and 19th centuries. 7.Saint Petersburg is often called the second, cultural or northern capital of Russia. 8. Its population is three times less – about 5 million people. 9. Although St. Petersburg is relatively young (just 300 years old), it has a rich history. 10. Its name had been changed several times – from Petersburg to Petrograd, from Petrograd to Leningrad, and then back to Petersburg. 11. Here, in 1917, the October Socialist Revolution began. 12. And just after World War II, in 1945, Leningrad was awarded the title of a Hero City for heroism of its citizens during the Siege, which had lasted 872 days and was recognized one of the greatest tragedies of this war. 13. Today Saint Petersburg is renowned for a large number of different kinds of museums, art galleries, cultural and historical monuments. 14. Among them are the Summer Garden with its famous railing, the Hermitage, the Kazan Cathedral, the Russian Museum, the Rostral Columns, the Alexander Nevski Monastery, the Alexander Column, the Palace Square, the Triumphal Arch, the Admiralty, the Field of Mars, etc. 15. It has an internationally recognized status of a cultural center of global importance.
Actually, I’m not fond of sport, but sometimes I watch hockey games with my parents. My favorite team is SKA from Saint-Petersburg, Russia and in my opinion, the best player of the team is Iliya Kovalchuk.
Ilya started his hockey career when he was 16 years old in Tver. At first time he was a player of the famous Moscow team ‘Spartak’. He is a fantastic hockeyist and the player is loved by Russians so much. Probably, it is because he is the first Russian player invited in NHL in 2001. Ilya played in such Russian hockey teams as “Spartak”, “Ak bars” and “SKA”, but he also signed some contracts with teams of USA and played in “Atlanta” and “New Jersey”. Ilya is also known as a finalist of the Stanley Cup.
