Operation
The air compressor is run directly off the vehicle engine and is driven continuously. Compression of the air is regulated by the governor and the compressor unloader. When the pressure in the air reservoirs reaches 120 PSI, the governor (which senses the wet tank air pressure) applies pressure to the unloader mechanism. The unloader then holds the inlet valves of the compressor off their seats preventing compression of the air. When the air pressure in the wet tank drops to 100 PSI, the governor exhausts the pressure to the unloader and the inlet valves are allowed to function
Sizing The Air Compressor (FMVSS 121 Requirements)
The minimum size or capacity of the air compressor is established by FMVSS (Federal Manufacturing Vehicle Safety Standards) 121 requirements. The compressor must be capable of raising the minimum required air reservoir volume from 85 PSI to 100 PSI in 25 seconds or less, with the engine operating at maximum governed speed. Minimum required air volume per FMVSS 121 is dependent upon the type and number of brakes, and allowances are made for air volumes exceeding the FMVSS 121 minimum requirements.
Inspection
It is important that the compressor receives a clean supply of air. The air strainer must be properly installed and kept clean. If the compressor intake is connected to the engine air cleaner, this connection must be properly installed and maintained. Check the compressor mounts to be sure they are secure. Check the drive for proper alignment and belt tension. Inspect the oil supply and return lines. Be sure these lines are properly installed and that the compressor is getting the proper supply of oil and that the oil is returning to the engine. Check the coolant lines to and from the compressor. Check the unloader mechanism for proper operation.
