The Kraken is a huge legendary sea monster. According to the Nordic folklore, it could be met in the seas from Norway through Iceland and all the way to Greenland. Superstitious sailors believed that the Kraken attacked ships with its strong arms or started to swim in circles around the ship creating a whirlpool which trapped and sucked down the ship.

Now people think that the Kraken legend started with sightings of giant squids that may grow to 13–15 meters in length. For ancient navigators the sea was dangerous, full of monsters in its depths.

The Kraken is still a popular character in films, books and computer games.
