The Legend of the Cherokee Rose
1. Little Hawk [hɔːk] - Маленький сокол (прозвище)
2. the Cherokees ['ʧɛrəki:z] - чероки (Индейское племя)
Long ago in the Year of the Big Harvest, the Land of Cherokees was becoming too densely populated and they realized they had to spread out into neighbouring lands in order to grow and prosper. The Cherokees sent out a party of the leading men of the country to talk with the Greeks. The Greeks had big areas of land at that time. And that land was good to the Cherokees. The Greeks were not as strong as the Cherokees because they had been at war for a long time.
The Cherokees sat in Council with the Greeks to arrange the terms of the exchange of some territories. This Council lasted for many days.
At the end of each day, the Greeks prepared an elaborate holiday, which was served by some young ladies. The most beautiful girl of them was the daughter of the chief.
Among the Cherokee group there was a young boy. His name was Little Hawk. The first night he sat near the campfire composing a love song. The next day he did not appear at the council meeting. He was with the daughter of the chief. They met in secret and enjoyed gathering wild flowers. The young lovers finally agreed that when the Council was over, and the Cherokees went away, the Little Hawk would come for his beloved girl. The young girl decided to hide in the trees at the bank of the river. At last the Greeks agreed to give the Cherokees a part of their land. But when the Cherokees had left, the Greeks could not see the daughter of the chief. So they went to look for her. And of course they found her at the bank of the river.
When the Little Hawk came back, he found his girl dead. He understood that the Greeks had killed her because they didn’t want to give that girl to the Cherokees with the land. No wonder that the Little Hawk was very upset but he buried the girl and went home. But when he came back the next spring he found a wild rose on the place where he had buried the girl. He called that rose “The Cherokee Rose”.
Nowadays the Cherokee rose is the first flower to bloom in spring. The rose welcomes the return of love. It is a symbol of love nowadays.
