London hosts many different events every year. But the London Marathon, one of the biggest marathons in the world, is a very special event. Its aim is to raise money for charity. The London Marathon is usually held in April and attracts over 46,500 participants every year. They run a traditional distance of 42.195 km. The route is mostly flat, and the runners pass many famous London sights on their route: Tower Bridge, the Tower of London, the London Eye, and the Houses of Parliament. The London Marathon was first arranged in 1981, when a former Olympic champion, Chris Brasher, wrote an article for the newspaper. He asked whether London could stage an event, similar to the New York Marathon, to bring people together. The first London Marathon took place in March the same year and it was run by only 6,500 people, mainly beginners. The Marathon races are held in three different categories: the Mass Race, the Elite Women’s Race, and the Wheelchair Race (a race for people in wheelchairs). Thousands of spectators encourage the runners on their way. Since the London Marathon began, there are several runners who have participated in it each year. All of them have always managed to reach the finish line. These men are known as ‘The Ever Presents’ and at present there are 24 of them. The oldest runner of this group is 80-year-old Reg Burbidge, and the youngest is Chris Finill, who is 48. The London Marathon is a world famous event. It is shown on television in over 150 countries.
