When my next-door neighbour Alex 'came/ had come back from his first term at university, he changed / had changed completely. He grew / had grown his hair long, and, when I saw him, he was wearing baggy black clothes instead of the cool clothes he wore / had worn before. When I asked him about his new look, he told me that he went/ had been to a concert when he arrived / had arrived at university, and after a few weeks he Bjoined / had joined a band.
