Zhambyl Zhabaev. His life and songs. Zhambyl was born in the present Zhambyl region, at the bottom of Zhambyl mountain. Grown up absorbing verses, epic songs and mother's poetic power - Zhambylhad been trained by the famous poet SuinbaiAronuly. He had contested with many prominent kazakh's poets like Aikumis, Kulmambet, Shashubai. Zhambyl is also the author of such song as "Algadai", "Ugai-ai", "Zhiyrmabes".
Zhambyl Zhabaev was to become renowned as one of Kazakhstan's great improvising musicians, or akyns. In the early 1860s, the young Zhambyl was a pupil of a well-known akyn named Suyunbay Aronov. Zhambyl developed his skills, and his reputation grew. He knew by heart colossal works such as the Kyrgyz Epic of Manas, and composed works of his own, describing the treasures of the Zhetisu region and the exploits of Kazakh heroes such as Utegen Batyr. At a musical competition, an aitys, in Verny in 1913, he chose to sing about the corruption of local officials. He embraced the ideals of the Russian Revolution, and was to become strongly supportive of the Soviet leadership.
In May 1936, he took part in a festival of Kazakh literature and art in Moscow, receiving the award. In the beginning of Great Patriotic war (1941-1945), he took up the campaign of the defence of the homeland against Nazism, contributing in September 1941 the poem for which he became best known across the USSR as a whole, People of Leningrad, My Children. He died in 1945, at the age of 99.
Most surviving photographs of Zhambyl depict the face of a wizened, white-bearded aksakal beneath a succession of fur hats. But although he is remembered broadly positively. Zhambyl sang about the heroism of Kazakh batyrs in his songs and the beauty of the landscapes of the Zhetisu. Zhambyl's name is still used for that of the region to the west of Almaty Region, but that its capital city, which was also called Zhambyl in Soviet times, was renamed into Taraz.
