7) How popular was Pelé?
Most people have never heard of the name Edson Arantes do Nas
cimento, but they have heard of Pelé. Without question, Pelé is the
greatest soccer player ever. Edson Arantes do Nascimento and Pele
are two names for the same man. Pelé was born on October 23,
1940, in Três Corações, a small village in Brazil. Soccer is the most
popular sport in Brazil, and like most other children of his age, Pelé
grew up playing soccer
Too poor to afford a soccer ball, Pelé and his playmates often made
one by tying together a bunch of rags. Their playing field was usu-
ally a sidewalk. Oldtin cans marked where the goalposts should be.
Pelé and the other boys from his neighborhood often dreamed of
one day becoming professional soccer players. They formed a neigh-
borhood soccer team, calling it the September 7 team after the name
of the street where they lived.
At the age of eleven, Pelé was discovered by Waldemar de Brito,
a former professional player. De Brito was then coach of the Ba-
uru Soccer Club. He signed Pelé to play for the junior Bauru team.
In 1956, when Pelé was fifteen, de Brito took him to the city of
Santos, Brazil, to try out for the Santos professional team. Pelé
immediately distinguished himself as one of the best players,
and he was not even sixteen years old yet
D. Pele's first game with Santos was on September 7-the name of
the street he once lived on the name of his first team, and the
date of Brazil's National Independence Day. In 1957, when Pelé
was sixteen, he was selected to play on Brazil's national team. He
scored the only goal for Brazil in the first game and another goal
in the second game. Then in 1958. Pelé helped Brazil win its first
World Cup, Between 1958 and 1970, Pelė played in four World
Cups
E. Throughout his career, Pelé had an amazing ability to move peo-
ple. Everybody wanted to see him play. In 1969, a war in Nigeria
was stopped for two days because the Santos team had been in
vited to play there and people on both sides were so eager to see
Pelé play. When Pelé retired in 1974, people thought he was leav-
ing the game for good, but six months later he signed up to play
for the New York Cosmos in the United States
F. Pelé was awarded the 1978 International Peace Award and was
named Athlete of the Century in 1980. He also was inducted into
the Black Athletes Hall of Fame in 1975. Most recently, Pelė was
named the National Olympics Committee's top athlete, even
though he never competed in the Olympics! Pele's name has be-
come synonymous with excellence in soccer. His 20-year career
has yielded some of the most memorable moments in soccer his-
tory. People today still refer to him as the great Pelé, the King of
Soccer

Sean Bean

Sean Bean, England's most versatile actor, holds a stellar career spanning every medium for approximately 20 years, in theater, radio, television and movies.

Bean was born in Handsworth, Sheffield, West Riding of Yorkshire, to Rita (Tuckwood) and Brian Bean. He worked for his father's welding firm before he decided to become an actor. He attended RADA in London and appeared in a number of West End stage productions including RSC's "Fair Maid of the West" (Spencer), (1986) and "Romeo and Juliet" (1987) (Romeo) , as well as "Deathwatch" (Lederer) (1985) at the Young Vic and "Killing the Cat" (Danny) (1990) at the Theatre Upstairs.

This soulful, green-eyed blonde's roles are so varied that his magnetic persona convincing plays angst-ridden villains, as in "Clarissa," passionate lovers like Mellors in "Lady Chatterley's Lover," rough-and-ready soldiers such as Richard Sharpe, heartwrenching warriors as the emotionally torn Boromir in "The Lord of the Rings," and noble Greeks, like Odysseus in "Troy," where his very presence in the film adds grace and validity to the rest of the movie. Recently, he did a turn in Shakespeare's "Macbeth," where as the principal lead, he so transfixed the audience that the show was extended in London and critically acclaimed. Bean, however, remains himself, a man's man, and in the glizty world of movies this is a rare thing indeed. Bean resides in London where he enjoys raising his beautiful daughters, his beloved football, and the occasional pint.

Bean has three daughters, Lorna, Molly and Evie.

An American farmer wanted to make an air trip. He had never ( had) an opportunity to fly before. There (was) an airport some miles off his farm. So one morning he (came) there to ask if he (could) make a short air trip.
"You see," he said to one of the fliers, "I have never ( made) an air trip and if you ( let) me fly, I (will pay) you for it." The flier told him that he (had to pay) 10 dollars for a ten-minute trip. "Why, it's a dollar a minute," the farmer ( said) in surprise. "Can't you reduce the price? It (is) somewhat high, indeed." The flier ( thought) a minute and ( said), "I will not ( take) any money, if you do not ( say) a word during the whole trip. But if you ( begin) speaking, the price (will increase)." The farmer ( thought) that it (was) a good condition.
"By the way," said the flier, "if your wife ( wants) to join you. you may take her also." The farmer (was) very happy. He ( thought) he (would have) a pleasant trip.
When he ( came) home, his wife (was cooking) dinner. "I ( have) pleasant news to tell you," he began. "We (are making) an air trip tomorrow. I (have settled) it with one of the fliers." By 3 o'clock the next day the farmer and his wife (had come) to the airport. Soon they (were) up in the air.
Though the plane (was going) up and down at a high speed, the passengers did not ( say) a word. When they ( landed), the flier said to the farmer, "I say, you (are) brave people, I thought you (would be afraid) to fly." "Well," said the farmer, "I (am glad), I do not ( have) to pay for the trip as I have not ( said) a word but I (was about) to speak to you when my wife fell out of the plane."
